According to the report on patent statistics analysis issued by State Intellectual Property Office, there has been a consecutive increase of the numbers of domestic patent applications and grant in chemical and pharmaceutical field, a symbol of the improvement in innovation by Chinese companies.
The statistics show that, from 2002 to 2008, there was an annual average growth rate of 29.8% in applications by Chinese companies, and the rate of granted patents was 42.8%. But the rate was13.8% and 14.4% with regard to foreign applications.
Of all the foreign patent applications, 91.9% are from the United States, Japan and Europe, and the applicants are multinational companies. The subject matters of the patent applications are compounds.
