In 2008, the number of trademark registrations in China reached nearly 700,000, ranking the first in the world for 7th consecutive year, which was lately released at a speech by Deputy Director General of State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) at the WIPO Inter-regional High-Level Forum.
Since 1979 when China restored the trademark registration, the number of trademark applications increased from 26,000 in 1980 to nearly 700,000 in 2008. At the same time, the quality and efficiency of trademarks examination and review have been significantly improved.
In 2008, SAIC received 17,000 applications for international trademark registration, an increase of 4.9%. Moreover, by the end of 2008, more than 130 countries had applied more than 530,000 trademark registration in China whereas in 1979, there were only 20 countries filing trademarks registration in China.
This is a result of Chinese trademark system which complies with the international rules. In addition to the trademark law, there are related regulations and rules for the protection of trademark. The whole society is becoming more aware of the importance of protecting the trademarks.
