According to the latest statistics released by SIPO, the SIPO received a total of 828,328 patent applications in 2008, 19.4 percent more than the previous year, and 411,982 patents were granted, 17.1 percent more than the previous year. From 1985 to the end of 2008, the SIPO received a total of 4,853,506 patent applications, and had granted a total of 2,501,268 patents.
Of all the patent applications received in 2008, 717,144 were domestic applications and 111,184 were foreign applications.
Of all domestic applications, 194,579 were applications for inventions, taking up only 27.1% of the total domestic applications. 223,945 were applications for utility models and 298,620 were applications for designs. In contrast, 95,259 out of 111,184 foreign applications are applications for inventions, taking up 85.7% of all foreign applications. Of all foreign applications, 106,023 were applications filed by enterprises, taking up 95.5%.
In China, 352,758 were employee applications filed by enterprises (295,510), academic institutes (45,145), and research and development institutes (18,612).
