Recently, with the official operation of Madrid international trademark abandonment under the online trademark service system, Chinese applicants can handle all matters online for international trademark registrations such as filing, renewal, transfer, cancellation, etc. demonstrating full electronic function of international trademark registration.
As a matter of fact, the Trademark Office of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) has been making continuous efforts to deepen the reform of trademark registration system, especially the service related to Madrid trademark registration system. In 2021, Chinese applicants filed 97 percent online Madrid applications. The average period for examining the international registrations was shortened to 2 months. In order to help the domestic applicants understand and use the Madrid international trademark registration system, the Trademark Office selected experts and organized road shows across the country to present the advantages of the Madrid system and explain the online application procedures for the applicants. Upon improvement of the quality and efficiency of the international trademark examination, the average period has been shortened to 4 months for international registrations designating China, and the average period for examining the international transfer, change and renewal has been shortened to 1 month, the fastest ever.
