Recently, according to the statistics from the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), the patent publications and grants grew in the Belt and Road Initiative countries in 2020, with 6,198 publications and 4, 245 grants.
In 2020, China's published patent applications also saw an increase of 17.1% year-on-year in 22 Belt and Road countries. The Republic of Korea received the most Chinese patent applications, with 3,395 filings, followed by Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines. China's granted patent applications also saw an increase of 19.3% year-on-year in 26 Belt and Road countries.
In 2020, the patent applications and grants covered all technical fields in the Belt and Road countries. Digital communications topped the list of industries involved in both Chinese patent publications (1, 435, +23.2%) and grants (455, +38.7%). Computer technology and electronic equipment ranked the second place and the third place respectively.
The Belt and Road countries developed their patent layouts in China. In 2020, 74 Belt and Road countries filed patent applications in China, including 23, 000 patents for invention (+3.9% year-on-year growth), up 3.9 percent from the previous year and higher than the year-on-year growth rate of total foreign applications. According to the statistics, 13,000 invention patents from 71 Belt and Road countries were granted in China in 2020.
Mr. Cai Zhonghua, professor of School of Economics and Management of Beijing University of Chemical Technology, said that we attributed the continued growths to China's Innovation-Driven Development Strategy and the strengthened patent protection efforts. The intellectual property consciousness of the creative entities has also been increasing greatly. After the commencement of the Belt and Road Initiative, China strengthened the international cooperation to allow more applicants from China to submit applications in these countries.
