According to the statistical from the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), China’s patent applications and grants have shown rises in the Belt and Road countries in 2020, with 6,198 publications and 4,245 grants.
The patent applications filed by Chinese applicants increased by 17.1% year on year in 22 the Belt and Road countries last year. South Korea received the most Chinese patent applications, with 3,395 filings, followed by Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The patent grants increased by 19.3 % year on year in 26 the Belt and Road countries.
The applications and the grants covered all the technical areas. The major filings were focused on digital communications computer technology, with 1, 435 applications, counting 23.2%. Meanwhile, a total of 455 grants of this area ranked top 1 in all the countries, with an increase of 38.7% year on year, followed by the areas of electrical apparatus, and energy.
The Belt and Road countries increased their patent layout in China. In 2020, a total of 74 countries filed patent applications in China, in which there were 23, 000 inventions, with an increase of 3.9% year on year, higher than that filed by other foreign applicants. 13, 000 patents for invention from 71 Belt and Road countries were granted by CNIPA last year.
The rapid growth of patent applications and grants in China and Belt Road countries was powered by the innovation-driven strategy and the measures of strengthening IP protection. CNIPA has been deepening the international cooperation between China and the Belt and Road countries since it was initiated 8 years ago. On such basis, our creative entities have more convenient conditions to file patent applications in these countries.
