According to China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) has become one of the major approaches for the domestic applicants to patent protection at abroad.

By the end of 2020, CNIPA has signed PPH cooperation agreements with 30 patent administration institutions over the world. PPH serves as the most active international cooperation program on patent examination, having the largest coverage. It allows Chinese enterprises to apply for and obtain patent rights from international patent administration institutions at a faster rate, with lower costs and with a higher rate of authorization.

Since CNIPA began the bilateral PPH pilot for the first time with Japan Patent Office in 2011, and the number of PPH partners and applications have increased rapidly, ranging from the patent administration institutions such as in US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, as well as 16 countries along with the Belt and Road Initiative.

By the end of June 2020, PPH requests made by Chinese applicants had totaled 9,066, with an annual growth rate of 22.6%. PPH has become one of the major ways for Chinese applicants to receive patent protection quickly in the overseas markets.
