On June 15, WIPO, Cornell University and European Institute of Business Administration jointly released the 2017 Global Innovation Index (hereinafter 2017 GII). According to the GII, China moved up 3 places and ranked 22nd among the world innovative economies. Switzerland, Sweden, Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Singapore, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Korea, Luxemburg, Iceland, Japan and France ranked top 15 in the list.
The 2017 GII evaluated 127 economies worldwide with 81 specific indicators in 7 categories. Among these categories, China rose in the rankings of regime, human capital research, infrastructure, knowledge and technology output, and creativity output.
It is noted that China is the only middle income country that is narrowing down its innovation gap with the developed economies. In the 2017 list, China ranked 3rd in innovation efficiency and 16th in innovation quality. Besides, China took lead in rankings of many indicators, including the numbers of domestic patent, utility model and design applications, domestic market scale, knowledge influence, knowledge workers, and the proportion of enterprises that provide formal trainings.
