According to the statistics from SIPO, the top ten rankings concerning the number of invention patents among Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in 2016 are: Beijing (768,000), Shanghai (352,000), Jiangsu (184,000), Zhejiang (165,000), Guangdong (155,000), Tianjin (147,000), Shanxi (73,000), Liaoning (64,000), Anhui (64,000) and Shandong (63,000).
It is also noted that, in 2016, SIPO received 45,000 PCT applications, an increase of 47.3% as compared to the same period of the previous year. Of these applications, 42,200 are from domestic applicants and 2,800 are from foreign applicants. In 2016, there are 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities with over 100 PCT applications; among which, the top six rankings are Guangdong, Beijing, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Shandong and Zhejiang. The number of PCT applications of the above-mentioned six provinces accounted for nearly 90% of all PCT applications in China.
