Recently the 2015 Annual Report on Intellectual Property for Forestry in China (hereinafter the Report) was released. The Report is an overall summarization of the main progress and achievement made in the field of IP for forestry.
According to the report, the State Forestry Administration (hereinafter SFA) issued in 2015 the Examination Guidelines for Applications of New Variety of Plant for Forestry, Administrative Enforcement Measures for New Varieties of Plant for Forestry, and 2015-2025 Action Plan for Protection and Sustainable Use of Genetic Resources of Forestry. SFA also took an active part in the amendment of the Seed Law of the People’s Republic of China, and promoted the implementation of 2015 Promotion Plan for Implementing Intellectual Property Strategy for Forestry.
The report also informed that the Office for the Protection of New Variety of Plant under SFA received a total of 273 applications for new varieties of plants rights in 2015 and granted 176 new varieties. 44,938 patents are available to be retrieved through the public database, among which 894 patents belong to research institutions of forestry, and 2,783 are from forestry colleges and universities.
Up to the end of 2015, 1,788 applications were received for new varieties of plants in forestry, 1,003 were granted. There are 230,645 patent publications relating to forestry, of which 120,774 are patents for inventions. Of all patent publications, 4,270 are from the research institutions of forestry, 12,391 are from forestry colleges and universities.
