Recently 2014 Annual Report on Intellectual Property for Forestry in China (hereinafter the Report) was released. The Report is an overall summarization of the main progress and achievement made in the field of IP for forestry.
According to the Report, the Office for the Protection of Plant Varieties under the State Forestry Administration received a total of 254 applications for new varieties of plants rights in 2014 and granted 169 new varieties. 31,512 patents are available to be retrieved through the public database, among which 749 patents belong to research institutions of forestry, and 2,364 are from forestry colleges and universities.
Up to the end of 2014, 1,515 applications were received for new varieties of plants in forestry, 877 were granted. There are 185,707 patent publications relating to forestry, of which 93,328 are patents for inventions. Of all patent publications, 3,376 are from the research institutions of forestry, 9,608 are from forestry colleges and universities.
In 2014, the State Forestry Administration also issued Administrative Enforcement Measures for New Varieties of Plant for Forestry, formulated 2014-2015 Action Plan for Protection and Sustainable Use of Genetic Resources of Forestry, established Examination Guidelines for Applications of New Variety of Plant Rights for Forestry, Administrative Measures for Test of New Variety of Plant Rights for Forestry, as well as the 2014 Promotion Plan for Implementing Intellectual Property Strategy for Forestry.
