According to Shanghai Intellectual Property Office, as of the end of 2013, there were 48,370 valid invention patents in Shanghai, an increase of 20% compared with the previous year. The patents held by every ten thousand people were up to 20.3.
The statistics showed that enterprises play an increasingly important role in innovations in Shanghai. In 2013, the total patent applications amounted to 24,363, accounting for 62.2% of the total and the patent grants held by enterprises amounted to 6,053, accounting for 56.9%. The top three patent holding companies were Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd and Shanghai Huahong Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd, respectively holding 414, 258 and 206 patents.
In particular, the amount of financing through patent pledge in Shanghai reached 1.02 billion RMB in 2013, that is, 5.8 times more than that of in 2012.
Besides, there was also a radical change of patent structure. The ratio of patent applications for inventions, utility models and designs was 45∶41∶14. The number of invention patents was 10% higher than that of the national average level, hitting an historical high record. And the ratio of Service and non-service patents was 87∶13.
