According to Beijing Intellectual Property Office, there are 40.4 patents for inventions per 10,000 populations in Beijing in 2013, ranking the first in China and surpassing that of the US in 2012.
The year 2013 witnessed a total of 123,300 patent applications from Beijing, a growth of 33.6%, and the patents granted for Beijing were up to 62,600, a growth of 24.1%. Local enterprises filed the most patent applications with a total number of 79,698, an increase by 45.6% as compared to the year of 2012. Academic institutions filed a total of 13,028 patent applications, an increase of 10%. The scientific research institutes filed 12,287 patent applications, an increase of 14.1%. Of 123,300 patent applications, 67,500 were applications for inventions.
