    More than 1 million Patent applications filed in China in the first half of 2013

    Recently, State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) released the statistics of patent applications and grants in China in the first half year of 2013. According to the statistics, from January to June, SIPO received a total of 1.012 million patents applications for three kinds of patent applications, an increase of 18.1% as compared with that of the same period last year and granted 672,000 patents, an increase of 26.8% as compared with that of 2012.

    In terms of types of the patent applications, there were 316,000 filings for invention, 397,000 for utility models and 299,000 for designs, a growth of 22.5%, 25.6% and 5.7% respectively. Among the patent applications for invention, 256,000 or 81.0% of which are from Chinese local applicants, 60,000 or 19.0% of which were from abroad. Of all the domestic patent applications for invention, 209,000 were service applications and 47,000 were non-service applications.   

    With regard to the grant of patent, a total of 672,000 patent applications were granted in China, of which 109,000 were applications for inventions; 365,000 for utility models and 198,000 for designs. Of all the patent grants for invention, 73,000 were granted to domestic applicants, accounting for 67.0%; 36,000 were granted to foreign applicants, accounting for 33.0%.
