Statistics from WIPO showed that the year 2011 witnessed a total of 2149 international trademark applications from China filed under Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks (Madrid system),accounting for 5.1% of the total. China is still the No.1 country designated for extension in terms of trademark protection.
The statistics indicate that China saw an increase of 11.5% in 2011 in using the Madrid system, ranking the the fourth position. In terms of designation for extension, China ranked the first, followed by the Russian Federation, the European Union and the United States of America.
The increase of China's international trademark applications filed under Madrid system reflects that Chinese enterprises pay more attention to the importance of strengthening IPR protection. Since China issued the National Intellectual Property Strategy in 2008 and implement the strategy of 'going out', the IP awareness and competitiveness among Chinese enterprises have been greatly improved and the enterprises are becoming more and more aware of importance of owning IP rights.
