Statistics from China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) show that the customs administrations across China detained 17,000 batches of goods suspected of IPR infringement in 2011, involving more than 95 million pieces of commodities, and of which 18 million pieces were suspected of violating the independent IP of Chinese enterprises, accounting for about 19 percent of the total.
In order to strengthen IP protection and anti-counterfeiting, Chinese customs were active in promoting cooperation with customs in other countries.. Memorandums of cooperation on the protection of intellectual property right were signed with the United States, European Union, Russia, Japan and Korea. In addition, an international partnership network was established as an effective way to help Chinese corporations protect their intellectual property rights overseas and cope with the increasing IP disputes abroad.
In 2011, the GAC approved the registration of 3,532 applications for the IP recordation, 47.6 percent of which were filed by domestic companies.
