Recently, the World Intellectual Property Organizations (WIPO) has released a report which shows that in 2010 WIPO witnessed more than 10 % increase of international trademark filings. That is, a total of 39,687 applications were received through the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks.
With regard to the growth of filing of international trademark registrations, the Republic of Korea, China, Italy, United States of America), European Union, and Japan are top six countries/regions with the growth rate being 42.2%, 42%,38.7%, 29.6% ,26.9% and 20.2%.
In terms of the number of applications, the EU accounted for over half of the international applications received with 22,403 in 2010, and about one quarter is from Germany. The EU Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market (OHIM) ranked second with 4,707 international applications, followed by the USA (4,147), France (3,565) and Switzerland (2,893). China ranked seventh with 1,928 applications.
