According to the statistics from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of international patent applications filed by China through PCT system was 12,337, an increase of 56.2% as compared to 2009,the fourth-ranked country with the most PCT applications. The other top 5 countries were US (44,855) Japan (32,156), Germany (17,171) and the Republic of Korea (9,686).
The statistics released by WIPO shows that the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) ranked the fourth among the world with regard to the number of PCT applications, just behind United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the European Patent Office(EPO).
In terms of the filers, enterprises are still the main applicants in China..Two Chinese companies, ZTE Corporation and Huawei Technologies Co., LTD., were ranked among the top ten applicants using the PCT system., ZTE took the second place on the list with 1,863 PCT filings, rocketing from the 20th place in 2009, while Huawei ranked the fourth, down by 2 places comparing to the previous year.
Yet none of the Chinese universities was on the ranking list, which is dominated by universities from the United States and other developed economies.
According to WIPO, China filed 12,337 PCT applications in 2010, overtaking the Republic of Korea (ROK).
