For the first half year in 2010, there was an increase of civil cases and decrease of pending cases in courts across China.
According to the Supreme People's Court, a total of 3,012,749 civil cases were accepted as first instance and 2,305,852 cases were concluded. By the end of June, there were 1,092,186 pending cases.
The rapid growth is in the areas of intellectual property. .A total of 20,357 civil cases relating to intellectual property were accepted by people’s courts across China, the increase rate being 40.99%.
In settling the cases, the courts adopted the principle of mediation first and combination of mediation and judgment. Due to the priority of the mediation, 65.78% of all cases at the first instance were settled before further proceedings in the court.
